CALLING ALL BEACH HOUSE FANS:
For those of you who haven’t heard, Katy Perry is set to release a new album entitled “Teenage Dream.”
While many seem to think Beach House shouldn’t be upset over this, I see it as a slap in the face. The only album or song written with a similar title was 35 years ago (T-Rex ballad “Teenage Dream”), since then Beach House has been the only band to (potentially) have adapted the name…until Katy Perry outright stole it. Katy Perry is a huge artist in an industry that is consistently moving towards the indie rock scene. And Beach House isn’t exactly unknown. They have a write up in Vanity Fair and raving reviews with Pitchfork and a number of other major websites and magazines. and There is no way she or someone in her entourage hasn’t heard of Beach House - their album came out 8 months ago! And she couldn’t come up with something more original than this? Though I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. I Kissed A Girl, her super provacative launch into fame was a rip off too! (Jill Sobule 1995) I didn’t like Katy Perry for her lack of originality before…this has just solidified my opinion.
Props to Beach House fans for updating Katy Perry’s wiki page:
“Mrs. Perry’s album title may or may not be ripping off the brilliant indie duo Beach House and their critically acclaimed record ‘Teen Dream.’ It will be a challenge for her to achieve the same aural masterpiece,” wrote one fan.
Too bad the comments have since come down.
